born and raised in littleroot town, an only child. she was one of the only children there in the beginning, but the town blew up. new land was forced, trees were chopped down, not only to make room for new houses, but for the lumber too. she liked living alone as a child. sapphire was clever, sapphire was mature. the adults in littleroot used to offer her plenty to do, and when father started to let her do field work, she was so happy. but she didn't really know what field work was. apparently she just had to stand in the grass and write down shit. sapphire wanted more than that.
pokemon were her life, she decided. and she begged her father for one and got it- and from that point on, she was a trainer. she trained them constantly, she fought wild pokemon constantly.
a boy came around eventually. she was interested in him, but in a purely platonic fashion. he was different than the other influx of children constantly coming in. and eventually, when he found her out in the field, pokeball in hand, she considered him something more than a stranger. he was a rival. heroes always need one of those. they battled. she lost.
she lost to a trainer who had been battling for one day. sapphire had been training her pokemon for two years.
her father praised him and he was sent off. not to do fieldwork, but for 'more important things,' and that was the moment when sapphire decided she was going to leave too, get as far away from littlerot town as she could. she loved her mother and she loved her father- but it wasn't the life for her.
she was gonna be a hero. and the best one you've ever even seen.
sapphire journeyed, almost always a step ahead-- and there was a time where she thought, hm. he's a bad rival. always trailing behind. but he would always win. every time, he'd defeat her.
(what if she was the rival, what if she was the one standing in the way. what if he was the hero and she was the villain.)
(no, i won't become that, i won't become that)
she eventually stopped trailing after him. there was no use, she had decided. she assisted him, she fought the two organizations as they swelled in numbers and followers- and eventually she took them down. (or was that ruby?)
he was praised for it all (rightfully). her role was important, they all admitted it, but "of a lesser degree." and for the first time she found herself full of resentment and envy. she hated the feeling. he had saved them all, he deserved it. (but don't i deserve it too?)
she joined zemina when the time came, finding it perfectly acceptable that children can save the regions. to say anything else would be a direct insult to her pride- after all, she was a child back then, and she accomplished so much.
they say 'you're green with envy,' but she's always been an envious shade of blue in those rare moments where she believes for a second that maybe she wasn't destined to be a hero. "but i am destined to be a hero," her mind will say to her, as she gears up for war.
(i can become that. i can become that.)
