Sometimes the best thing to be is just good enough. Nobody comes after you... nobody comes to smack you down. If he had his way he would never have gone on the epic adventure Pearl and Platinum had dragged him on. Then again he never really got his way now did he?
He grew up in the small town of Littleroot as the child of a researcher and a simple homemaker. He had a rather simple and boring life. He enjoyed it that way. He had great friends in Pearl and Platinum. What more could he need? Then all that mess with Team Galactic thrust the three into the spotlight.
After all of that fun mess was over Diamond headed back to Professor Rowan to aid in his research. He just wanted to be useful. That was his big dream. He never thought he could be as great as his friends so he wanted to do what he could. The more he learned the more valuable he would be to them. That was the idea. This is how he spent much of his time until this war business started.
What was he to do? Did they expect him to take on this fruitless war? He had always followed his friends lead and his choices here were no different. In fact the only reason he was on Kopec's side was because of Pearl. He just couldn't bear to be apart from his friends. Without them... what was he? Nothing. Alone.
