▶ HISTORY:
The invisible girl. This always seemed to be Leaf's fate. From a young age it seemed people just brushed over her. No siblings, but with parents constantly busy, she only got what affection mother and father could fit in between shifts and sleep. In a small town with few kids she only ever really had two friends, but they were so caught up in each other. Red and Blue always too busy being rivals, opposing one another, left Leaf feeling out of place. She always dreamed that once she got her first pokemon she'd be making a name for herself, not knowing her childhood would frame her future.
From the moment they picked their pokemon she was relegated to the back. Red picked first, then Blue, and while they battled it out she looked at the one lone pokeball left at the table. She'd had her heart set on Squirtle, but she promised the pokemon she got instead that it wouldn't taint her love for it. No one picked her either. They'd get along just fine.
For the majority of her journey she was too far behind the other two. Such passion and talent, how could she keep up with that? Gyms that took her multiple tries to beat and pokemon that seemed to take days to tame took her peers only a couple hours and a firm look. Fitting rivals for eachother, they made one another rise and fall in tandem while Leaf straggled behind. Occasionally allowed the honor of being absolutely crushed in battle.
Still, despite her lack of talent and despite the way everyone watched and loved the "dynamic duo" from Pallet Town, Leaf never lost all her spirit. She worked hard and muscled through gym after gym. And when problems arose thanks to Team Rocket she did her best to contribute. And while she may not have toppled Giovanni or wiped out bases she took to taking on the small fries.
She defended civilians from grunts, and occasionally even tested herself against admins. No one talked about her work, and the praise was only sparing, but it was hard work that no one wanted to do. So Leaf did it. The invisible defender, keeping the streets clean and people safe.
The task wore her down. She lost pokemon, experienced not only her partners and friends face harm but was hurt by it herself. Not every grunt ran around with just a zubat and a raticate, and not every admin thought the fight was done when their pokemon were gone. Leaf learned that better than most.
And then when she thought she couldn't take it. When she thought the pain was too much, the praise was too little, and she was just a kid she'd hear about them. Red and Blue toppling the corrupt silph corp, Red defeating Giovanni, and still never a word about the girl going toe to toe with Team Rocket's garbage and stragglers. And then when all was said and done she was expected to just move on. And while she wanted to scream, to protest, she just wasn't hero enough. So she did. She went back to training.
The time spent fighting Team Rocket did one thing. It hardened her and strengthened her partners -- the ones who had survived at least. Gym leaders were suddenly easy to topple. But they all seemed softened. The last gym seemed like a slap in the face, an insult. A fill in for the leader Blue had defeated and Red had ousted as gang leader. But she defeat him nonetheless, and moved on to the endgame.
Victory Road was the greatest challenge yet. The pokemon were vicious, the trainers merciless, and the terrain and darkness of the cave unforgiving. She and her pokemon came out battered and down, and it felt as if as soon as she finished the challenge she could see them on the large screen. Could hear the announcement of their battle from the exit. Red and Blue, finishing what they started. Red succeeding and taking his place as champion.
Finally she broke. The tears came hard, and right there on Inidgo Plateau Leaf fell to her knees and sobbed and cursed and hated all at once. All the years caught up to her and it seemed she poured emotion until her heart and soul were nothing but empty husks. These two boys she'd been chasing were never in her reach. She left indigo plateau without ever so much as exchanging words with the Elite Four.
For a long while she was bitter. Upset. Blue became a gym leader, replacing the loser she'd defeated to reach Victory Road. Red became champion, threw it away, and left to who knew where. Meanwhile she was left to just exist. She was a powerful trainer, and took to wandering and finding out what that meant for her. Not a prodigy, or a great champion, but just a powerful trainer. How many were like her? What made her an individual? The years passed in what felt like a blur.
She jumped from town to town like a true vagabond. Eventually made her way to the Sevii Islands. She trained and trained, met many people. But even out there Leaf couldn't escape their names. Blue and Red. She was rarely Leaf when introduced to new people, or when recognized. No, she was "that girl from Pallet", the one the same age as the two elite trainers. Still, she explored and worked. Saw amazing things. Caught glimpses of legendary pokemon and traded blows with some of the best "powerful trainers" in the land. Finally Leaf started to form a name for herself. And then everything went to hell.
News on the league was getting grimmer and grimmer, even on the Sevii Islands. Word of how teams like Team Rocket, the behemoth she'd hacked the toes off of, had cropped up everywhere. Had caused great destruction and damage. That the league was failing. Then Kalos rebels. It shocked Leaf, but she understood it. She'd watched police and leaders do nothing in the face of Team Rocket. Had watched as the League tried to gloss over the dangers and horror in the world for the sake of their precious system. She joined the insurgents without hesitance.
A new sense of purpose, Leaf threw herself into Boure's workings. While not a celebrity, her name was finally known, and it earned her respect when she started. This respect and her actions over the next year and a half of war would earn her more of the former and more chances to do the latter.
Leaf's name and her history became useful, and she rose up to become a Publisher for Kanto. Suddenly everyone wished to hear of her stories from her childhood. The tales of how she had fought the grunts of team rocket two, three at a time. The way that she had saved families the league neglected, and most importantly the way the league brushed all the chaos she faced daily under the rug. She became a personality. A rallying point for any who had experienced her horror, a person to look up to and admire. Protests were held with her at the head, she spoke to large crowds from her porch in Pallet, platforms in cities, and conference rooms.
Finally people called her "Leaf". Finally she was no longer invisible. Finally she had a cause. And she would make sure she would always be seen, and always be known. And most importantly, that the league would never produce another child like her. One beaten down by their system, but used for stability.
tl;dr Leaf spent her life in the shadow of Red and Blue. They did things faster and better than her, and she was left many times straggling behind and cleaning up the messes they'd left untreated. It made her feel like she was invisible. Always a third wheel loosely connected to the bike of Pallet Town's prodigies. When the league fell apart she saw not only a chance to right its wrongs, but also to gain publicity and fame equal to her old friends'. She climbed the ranks and is now a demonstrator for Boure, holding the title of "Publisher".
