Many are familiar with Red, the quiet hero who stood his ground against Team Rocket, of his journey through Kanto, his exploits over the gym leaders and finally his rise to becoming Pokemon Champion. What perhaps many have overlooked was his lack of emotional quotient. A broken family. A persistent rival. A fragile sense of self. All his life, he'd been surrounded with battle after battle, and people praised him for it, congratulated him for his strength. But the boy wasn't so sure, never sure if the hurt he caused was for something better or worse. He could see his mother, a ghost of her former self. He'd stayed a while with her, right after becoming champion, he came home and she greeted him like she used to, made him a chocolate cake for his troubles. But there was strain her eyes, in her movements, the way she looked at her son was something different and obtuse. Even after the divorce was settled, he couldn't see the point of it all, no longer could she smile as carefree, and altogether, he forgot what is was to see her face break into a warm smile and soon he moved on.
Perhaps it was a mistake to let him leave in the first place.
He kept to the landscape, for a few months, he travelled with his pokemon alone, and swept through Johto about as lost as he was when he first began. Still they celebrated his strength, trainers challenged him on sight, perhaps thinking that if they could best the league champion, they could win some of that glory for themselves. But none could do so, Another year had flashed by and Red still knew nothing of what he wanted to know. He rarely stopped by in towns or cities, preferring the woods where the quiet was drowning enough to calm his thoughts, where there were less to bother him.
Eventually he secluded himself to Mt. Silver and built himself a small cottage atop it, living off what he could and more often than not it was his Charizard who would fly off to fetch whatever was needed. He traded letters with Professor Oak for a while, reported on his sighting of pokemon, and offered to return the pokedex that had been gifted to him. But the good professor had refused, and so Red kept the device, a reminder of his journeys. Everyone so often it would be packed with a letter from Green or Blue, and he would send one along, assuring them that he was fine and well, otherwise he lived in isolation. There was only ever one instance that another had come to challenge him on the mountain. The boy'd flame was enough to spark Red's enthusiasm for battle, and it was sight to behold. Red lost, but he accepted it with grace, and provided a few words of congratulations before settling back into his home.
Needless to say, he retired from his position of champion, though even then, he did minimals checks with the league and it was decided that he would step down to let someone else take responsibility. Which was fine with Red. He was only made aware of the events happening throughout the region by Oak's letters, slowly they turned grimmer and worried, until the last was a proclamation of the league's instability, sides were meant to be chosen, and the professor could no longer write to him due to circumstance.
It was then that he decided to leave the mountain. Though what he would do... Well, he was just as lost as ever.
