▶ HISTORY:
Humans are noisy. Saying something like that might get you a few strange looks, depending on the company you keep, but generally speaking no one really disagrees with this assessment. Mankind, for all its subtler wonders, is exceptionally noisy. No single species makes quiet as much racket and it’s the most unattractive trait Elijah has observed. Even from a young age it was something that grated in his nerves and began his lifelong aversion to people and the stupidity that often follows in their wake.
It all started in Vermillion City, Kanto – well, not really. If we’re being purely technical the story begins in Celadon City but Elijah hangs onto no feelings of fondness for that cesspool. Elijah was born amidst the lights and glamour of Celadon, the undisputed hub for trainers, tourists and bad life choices. His mother, bless her heart, is an example of all three. At nineteen she was just one of many trainers to have traveled to see the much talked about city and reap the benefits of what should’ve been a short stint in Kanto.
And then she met Damien.
Damien Noble was nothing that his name implied and everything that Celadon hid. He was a magnet, Eli will give him that, for women. They loved his clean-cut look and for all the hatred he might harbor for the man, his father knew how to make people want him. Young, inexperienced and thoroughly swept off her feet she went with him for a few nights and that was really all it took. She hadn’t been careful, he hadn’t cared, they parted ways and she continued her journey until a few months later when she began experiencing bouts of unexplainable sickness and discomfort. A trip to the hospital informed her of the baby she would have and she went back to Celadon in tears to confront the man who was to be the father of her first born.
Even now Elijah still isn’t completely sure of how everything went down, not that it’s particularly critical or anything. They fucked, they separated, she got pregnant, they argued, and then they got married. Tragic really. His mother wasted eight years of her life in that mans house, caring for a child she hadn’t expected to have with a ‘husband’ who that only in title.
She soon realized that the man she married was a fraud. Damien was a swindle and a cheat, his gallivanting with other women only stopped in spurts when she found the nerve to speak up for herself. He supplied them with the necessities and occasionally made himself look like a model parent for what it was worth but ultimately his hand in raising his son was minimal. His mother was miserable and he was only barely beginning to understand the cause of it when their conditions worsened.
Celadon was known for two things discounting the gym, its mega mart and its casinos. His father fell to the flashing lights and rush of gambling as a means to cope with his dissatisfactory home arrangement and gradually fell into debt. Once he’d spent all of his money he would steal money from his wife, who worked for the giant mall, and would spend that too. When Eli was eight his mother gave up. She had tried to convince herself that he would eventually come around, that he’d realize the harm he was doing but the man was swiftly turning violent when he couldn’t fuel his addiction or when collectors called their home because the mortgage hadn't been paid. The last straw came when he broke a bottle over the Eli's head when the boy had been watching cartoons 'too loudly'. The incident is what caused the horizontal gash across his face that would become one of his more notable features and would be the source of many unsavory questions. She packed her things and left and never looked back.
They found themselves in Vermillion City a week later and found the cheapest apartment they could afford. Eli, who’d always been a rather quiet child, didn’t seem too affected by the sudden move. He asked all of three questions: “Will dad be coming later?” “Is this where we’re going to live now?” and “Will you be happy?” Afterward he sank into his new lifestyle without complaint.
For the most part he liked Vermillion City. The water was soothing and the sea breeze was much better than the smog that lingered in Celadon but just like his birthplace it was noisy. Living in an apartment complex there was no shortage of noise. He may have complained once or twice about the volume but typically kept his displeasure to himself. It could not be said that Elijah was anti-social. In the years to come he had many you could slot into the ‘friend’ category and plenty of admirers too, but every few days he would disappear from sight and hole himself up someplace to be away from it all and nobody quite knew where he went during those times.
The beach was usually out of the question. Tourists liked to linger there as much as the citizen, not to mention there were the cruise liners that docked in the harbor making it entirely too busy for him to stand. Beyond the city was an equally bad idea as he didn’t have a pokemon of his own and there simply were too many dangers to confront by himself. He did, however, discover a path just outside the city where a narrow waterway ran and it led to a small, island-like patch of land that he could swim to and enjoy some peace and quiet. Nobody disturbed him there because nobody came towards this area for whatever reason and he was quite happy with his discovery until he was fifteen.
It was just any other day where he was simply fed up with the world and everyone in it and wanted some time to himself. He’d retreated to his little island when a series of explosions went off in the area. While it didn’t dislodge any rocks that fell near where he was stationed the chorus of wails attracted his attention. He knew what sat just under a mile away from his little hideout: The abandoned power plant. It had become a nest for electric pokemon in its disuse and only the very brave, or very foolish, ventured there for any reason. Thus far only Lt. Surge, the Vermillion City gym leader, went there with any sort of regularity to speak of and nobody was quite sure what he even did there. But the war veteran wasn’t there now and by the sounds of it something or a bunch of somethings were in trouble.
Usually Eli wouldn’t have budged or, if he did, it would be to hightail it home but that day he gave in to curiosity and swam towards the power plant entrance. When he climbed out of the water he nearly had to jump right back in to avoid being blown up. Apparently, something had really pissed off the plant's Voltorb population because wherever he looked there were downed red and white pokemon who had blown themselves up or others on the verge of doing so. He didn’t know what to do and almost went back but the cries were louder now and he mindlessly followed them inside.
After dodging more angry suicide balls and navigating the halls he came upon a small group of Shinx. Two of them were injured, presumably caught in one of Voltorb’s explosions and the other two were wailing over the unconscious form of a Luxio. They fearfully regarded the human boy and sparked at him in warning but gave up upon seeing the crowd of Voltorb’s advancing on them. Without thinking Eli hid Luxio – praying it was still alive – in a nearby cabinet and picked up the two injured Shinx, the remaining two were quick to cling to his coat with their claws and they ran. It wasn’t a very long chase at all since there really weren’t that many places for them to go. They group ended up outside again with the roar of a boat sounding the arrival of Lt. Surge who quickly took over the situation. As it turned out there seemed to have been a territorial dispute between the mother Luxio and the Voltorb that vastly outnumbered it. They whisked the group to the Pokemon Center and everything checked out okay…except for one Shinx.
One of the cubs absolutely refused to get her claws out of his jacket and when he’d tried to shrug off the garment she actually bit his pant's leg and wouldn’t let go. Nurse Joy and Surge thought it was hilarious and quickly explained that the Shinx was smitten with him, probably from his impromptu heroics. Needless to say it was an interesting event.
Things were dull after that. He still hated the majority of people but was quickly learning that Tapioca - naming the Shinx after the pudding snacks she liked to steal from him - wouldn’t let him rest like he used to. She would run off, forcing him to follow and always appeared restless. His mother informed him of why this was and advised him to travel a bit. Reluctantly he did so and after months of battling and wandering Kanto, ended up in Celadon City all over again.
It was strange being back there after so long but Elijah made it a point to stay away from the casino areas and the district where he used to live. Not that he had to. As luck would have it Team Rocket had gotten very comfortable in the metropolis and their presence, while not obvious at first, was not exactly hidden from view. Eli had no desire to get involved but he seldom got what he wanted in life and this instance was no different. A quick trip to the massive shopping outlet and he ran into his father in the elevator. The man hadn’t changed much, still a swindler and con but now he worked for the Rocket’s and ran one of their casinos, collecting debts from those who couldn’t pay their tabs. It was disgusting.
Having had his fill Eli attempted to leave but the man he shared an unfortunate amount of DNA with was not so keen on letting his fledgling son leave his grip a second time. They battled. Eli, admittedly, had never been much of a trainer as his interest in strength were vague at best and his chronic laziness stunted him immensely. He tried to only be just strong enough to handle whatever was thrown at him but he could not have calculated for this. Elijah's defeat was inevitable and with his team defeated he was quickly apprehended and knocked out, coming awake in the basement facility in Celadon's Silph Corp. Naturally his father wasn't far and the discussion that followed is something that would make his blood boil years down the line.
There was nothing left for him to do when he was finally left by himself nor did he have any way of telling how long he was trapped in that room. He'd learn later that he'd been held captive for a week before an unexpected rescuer in the way of a random Trainer - not even a gym leader or pokemon league official - happened by the room and unlocked it to take a peek. He couldn't really say they interacted because their words were short. Eli had no pokemon to battle and the trainer could see that the young man wasn't a Rocket so he moved on.
With his newfound freedom Elijah quickly went in search of his team and was heartbroken to discover that only two of his pokemon were there, the rest presumably assigned to the enemy. Taking what he could salvage he left Celadon in a whirlwind and vowed to tear down the city brick by brick until he'd properly eradicated the Rocket syndicate.
Roman became his alias after the incident.
