▶ BASIC INFORMATION.
he's fine, he's fine, he's fine.
some days, ruby even believes it.
other days, he's only too aware of the strength that rubs raw against his bone. when he exercises it, people get hurt. people leave screaming.
the people in father's gym call it strength. they praise it. they consider it a gift to be nurtured. they let him rot until he becomes beautiful.
he's angry when he finds something rotting on the surface of his heart. he's even angrier when he realizes that it's not a foreign parasite. it's him, it's him.
he complains to his mother. his mother worries about him. his mother takes him to a psychic and his alakazam (ruby's never liked them since. that's why he keeps a metagross. ruby is too organic and fleshy for it to poke around in his brain beyond a surface level -- even then, it feels the rot too.).
he does not complain to his mother again. not to someone who looks to someone else to fix her problems. not to someone so unlike father.
(here's the kicker:he doesn't even like his father. but you don't have to like someone to respect them.)
ruby thinks he's looking for a shield, but not to protect himself. to protect others from him. but that's not how the world works, and the bees behind his skull remain an itch that he just can't reach.
his mother thinks that a change of air will do him some good. she thinks that hoenn will save her son.
that son ends up saving hoenn instead. funny how things work out that way. he sends the bad guys crying to their bosses, rescues helpless wingulls in distress, and collects a trove of badges before beating wallace clean and fair. it was almost like a game. a game. sometimes ruby wonders if that's all it ever is to whatever higher powers above.
it's not long before he abdicates the champion's throne to wallace and leaves to become zemina's cannon. ruby's not looking to sit in a prettied tower waiting for someone else to relieve him of it (to save him from the tower of dragons). what they don't realize is that he's not the princess or the knight.
he is the dragon.

(he's the hero of hoenn. he's supposed to be courteous, kind, modest -- everything that he could have been, if only.)
