▶ HISTORY:
Dan's life, for most of his life, was one of peace and quiet. He was the adopted son of an elderly couple of breeders, who specialized in raising the many water types of the Unova region. From an early age he was an integral part of the family business, at first simply observing his parents at work, and in his older years running important errands and doing a lot of heavy lifting.
He rarely had time to experience life outside of the family business. Schooling was all conducted at home, through questions asked between sessions of hard work or the occasional formal bit of homeschooling. Interaction with others mostly boiled down to the occasional "hello" when seeing someone pass by or handling a quick business meeting. It lead to Dan knowing of a lot of people, but not knowing many more but a close few. While far from everyone's ideal life, Dan didn't mind it one bit. It was simple, it was quiet, and it was enjoyable.
Each year, however, Dan had to find himself growing up faster and faster. It wasn't anything quick or dramatic, but rather the slow and inevitable march of time taking its toll on his older parents. Running a breeding ranch is hard work, after all, and the strenuous physical activity it takes doesn't do the body much good. Dan found himself having to do more and more, making up for parents that each year needed a bit more bed rest or a few more days of vacation. It was stressful work, but making sure his parents wouldn't end up crippling themselves was more than worth it. He simply gritted his teeth and took the stress as it came.
For many years this worked, even as Dan found himself slowly becoming head of the household in all but name. However, the war represented an inevitable breaking point he just couldn't move past. Slowly refugees began flooding into Unova from Kalos, the war's point of origin, and coastal cities like Humilau were their first and often last point of entry. In an act of selflessness that forever touched and inspired Dan, his parents chose to offer up their own home as a place of rest.
Now the breeding business has come to a halt. The watery expanses that Dan and his family raised Pokemon in were boarded over, hastily-made tenements built over them for refugees. The rest that his family once found was interrupted as they tried their hardest to care for the new arrivals, even as it took a toll on their health and aged them significantly. Dan himself is simply trying his hardest to keep up with the new tempo, taking advantage of his youth and his parents' Pokemon collection to try and learn the art of battle for himself. After all, the war's been brewing all over: who was to say Humilau wouldn't be next?
He doesn't know what side to fight for, or why this war's even going on in the first place. All he knows is that any threats to his home, his family, and the people they're responsible for will have to go through him first.
