The snowstorms of Snowpoint City were only the second coldest thing Isaac found himself having to deal with growing up. The first coldest was the stern, disapproving gaze of a man he refused to call father. He didn't always feel this way. In fact, in his youth, he yearned so badly to try and get the Karel's approval. There was no length he wouldn't strive for the love and care of his parents: good grades in school, being impeccably nice to his older brother Sasha, learning all he could about Pokemon in hopes of becoming a great trainer. While his mother doted on his every word, though, his father was always just out of reach.
The treatment only got worse as Isaac grew older. Indifference grew to rage, first just at Isaac but later at his mother, Diane, too. Home became unpleasant for the boy to be around, and he often stayed away from home for as long as possible to try and escape the tension in the air. Some days he just bummed around, hitting up any place that looked fun or playing in the snow with his brother. Other days he strayed near the Snowpoint Temple, as if hoping it would have answers for him. He was never let inside, of course, but the guardians were a comforting presence. One with sandy-colored hair always took extra interest in his arrivals, giving advice whenever the boy was in need of guidance.
Of course, Isaac's parents grew used to his departures. They started taking advantage of the kids being out of the house to have . . . "talks." Sometimes peaceful, sometimes not, but they were always over before the kids were back home. One day, however, Isaac ended his wanderings early and was treated to a front row seat to one of these discussions. He didn't understand much, but when the words "not mine" rang out as clear as day Isaac finally understood.
His father was always a somewhat controlling man, was he not? And having a living reminder that not everything could be controlled drove him mad. But he wasn't the only one who felt that way.
Isaac's yearning for acceptance turned to pure loathing. How dare that man leave him to the side, preferring to shower his "true" child in love while leaving Isaac helplessly to the wayside. And how dare that man put him and his mother through al these years of neglect for a single transgression of hers. For a while he lashed out at his mother too, for bringing him into these circumstances instead of staying faithful. When he saw the pain in her eyes, however, he quickly rescinded such rage. She was the only one who understood his pain, his only ally in this plight. She didn't need to suffer anymore.
Finally, at the age of thirteen, the boy decided enough was enough. He went to confront his father, demanding answers, respect, and to finally be acknowledged. The talk turned to arguing, tempers flaring until eventually Karel lost his patience and smashed Isaac across the face. For a split second Isaac thought he saw remorse in the man's eyes, but he discarded that thought as mere fantasy. Not like he was seeing so great after such an impact, after all. This was the straw that broke the camel's back, and Diana demanded a divorce. It was a long, lengthy procedure, that Isaac is still sitting through to this day.
Just kidding. Isaac was out of there as soon as Karel even dared to strike him. With nothing but the clothes on his back, an eyepatch to cover his weaker eye, and a handful of Pokemon stolen from his father's basement, he ran. His destination was unsure, only knowing that he wanted to get as far away from Snowpoint as possible. He considered approaching the Snowpoint Temple for guidance one last time, but decided against it. The abandonment he felt at home only welled up further in his gut as he approached the temple's icy walls.
And so, discarding the name Karel gave him and adopting one of his own choice, Cain fled. He's been fleeing ever since, bouncing from one war-torn city to the next.
